The interior definately surpassed the exterior, with a maroon colour theme, cushioned chairs, deep dark wood and orchid flowers swaying across the walls it was very ala upper shanghai class restaurant. The most interesting part of the trip was the toilets were behind a ‘hidden door’ and the decor inside was chinese fused with 20th century.
We ordered 9 dishes (7 mains and 2 desserts). All the dim sum were delicious but a few stood out from the rest, these were: Egg tarts, Kings crabmeat with egg white dumpling and chrysanthemum custard bun.
First of all the egg tarts were amazing! I was absolutely wowed by the whole dessert overall. However, the middle wasn’t so lovely in comparison to the pastry. The pastry was very light and crispy which should compliment, I think, a soft and smooth filling. But to my disappointment the filling was sweet and slightly smooth but not soft enough. I would like to mention here that the egg tarts at Golden Palace are deliciously amazing…….not everytime though, which is a real shame!
Next, the chrysanthemum custard bun looked different to what I had in mind about a custard bun. Think bun but with hedgehog spikes. This dish is worth a try even if you’re not exacty a fan of custard buns, because the bun is soft and the filling is just right. Not too overpowering with the sweetness and a hint of chrysanthemum is exciting and fresh everytime a bite is taken!
Kings crabmeat with egg white dumpling (had a little sprinkling of roe on top) was pretty to admire and lovely to eat. This dish wasn’t that much exciting except it was worth a mention here since I was and still am relishing in the fact that the dumpling was very soft with the occasional pop of lovely roe. Lovely!
For a party of three ordering 9 dishes and tea. The bill came up to £37.xx including service charge (12.5%). Quite expensive but the ambience and decor was worth it!
Oh, and I didn’t like the prawn cheung fun much, prawns were great but the pastry was so-so. Too thick? Too rough? I can’t decide

I am still looking out for a tasty and affordable dim-sum place – any personal recommendations?
I used to visit Gerrards Corner a lot, but have no idea if it is still up to previous standards.

With regards to Chinatown, I personally like going to Lido. It’s deco in the restaurant is not particularly interesting, going for pale walls and not much of a theme, but on the few times I’ve been, the dim sum is hot when they serve and on the cheaper side of prices (£1.80 getting you the ’small’ dim sum) yet still offering a decent range of dishes. I’ve read a review on Plum Valley, also Chinatown, which sings songs of praise about the place, and to me it sounds like it is on par with Pearl Liang, with non-conventional chinese dimsum, yet still serving at a good quality. The prices are on the expensive side if you’re comparing to the average dimsum in Chinatown. (See Suzie’s Notes on the fellow food bloggers list
